3 basic SEO rules - use common sense

Many of you are looking for a secret google tricks or holes in the algorithm or tricks that are not necessarily white hat but work like a charm.
Or course for many of you who are looking for this kind of stuff the below SEO rules will be useless, but from my experience, 90% of all not only clients but also “seo specialists” and designers omit them. This is so sad. I’m looking at many businesses around, with websites that are completely useless in terms of “being searchable”. I got used to seeing tons of those 150 Euro websites around and I don’t get annoyed anymore as much as I used to. But let’s put aside websites that built only to exist.

This post is more about people who thought: “Hey, I have a completely useless website, I’ll ask some SEO guy to do something about it”. 10 points for them. They think.

All goes well, money is paid, crazy shit is done, hundreds of links are “built”…. and the results are… well OK. So what is the problem in this scenario? SEO specialist used many advanced methods and tricks, “crazy shit”, and used latest tips, but…. Forgot about COMMON SENSE.
So here it is:

1. Common sense of Revelancy

Is the website even about the subject connected to the keyword targeted?
There are extreme examples of websites about “tomatoes” that are targeting keywords like “door handles”, but I don’t mean here these. I’m talking about something more like “it ALMOST fits”. Say, BER Ireland, competitive keyword, (mainly because of the spamy websites - subject for a different article). So you are a builder, you have no experience in BER, you don’t even have a certificate yet, you cannot offer anything, and to be honest you’re not sure what it means. But HEY, it’s a good keyword, I’m a builder, let’s target for it! Well, WRONG.

Have something to offer regarding BER, create a section on your website about the service connected to BER, and promote it. Don’t stuff BER everywhere you can on your old website only because you THINK it’s a good search word.

COMMON SENSE: Target keywords that your business is related to and can provide some service related to it. Duuuuhhhhh

2. Common sense of Titles

Seriously, what’s with the Company name in the Title Tag on all the pages? If you have a services page,  Title should at least contain the word Services (the minimum requirement). You must be thinking that I’m thinking that you are stupid:) You may know that, but how come I can easily find an Irish website coming up on the first page of google for a competitive keyword that has absolutely no common sense in the Title tag.

COMMON SENSE: The title of the page should be the title of the page. Duuuuhhhhh

3. Common sense of Headings

This one is similar to the above. I understand that many people don’t even know what H1 tag is. I don’t blame some girl in the office that uses some CMS. Of course it’s easier for her to make a heading just BOLD or make the font bigger. She is to scared to click on the word “Paragraph” and the little arrow beside it. Cause if she did, there it was. The Heading 1 option. So not her fault at all. The CMS should have been built in a way that it automatically generates (editable) H1 tag and even makes it look good.

COMMON SENSE: Use H1 tag for page headings and… watch out…. The heading of the page should be the heading of the page. Duuuuhhhhh

This is really basic right? And I know that you knew that already, but…  do you do that?

PS. I must change this layout, cannot read anything:)…
